I’m sure I am not alone in this problem, but my child is addicted to my iPhone. Most children probably like to play games on various apps, but not Thurston. He likes nothing more than watching videos on YouTube of people taking toy cars out of their packaging. He is a bit odd.
He often manages to get hold of the iPhone when he is munching on some Organix Goodies and so he covers the whole handset in mushed up soggy tomato crisps. This led him to give my iPhone a bath…..bye bye iPhone number 1. iPhone number 2 was killed when I rushed to help Thurston who was having a leg cramp and threw my handbag on the floor……bye bye iPhone number 2. The insurance payments are likely to creep up this year. Despite people laughing at me, I decided on impulse to buy Thurston (then aged 3) his own iPod Touch, as I was desperate to use my own phone without having to hide behind a cushion or the kitchen door. Thurston was not in the least interested in this trade-off and is sticking with my iPhone (which is already looking derelict despite being replaced a month ago!).
I needed some extra protection for the iPhone or alternatively, something to disguise the iPod Touch to try and fool him into using that instead. Fisher Price have come up with a fantastic invention, the Laugh and Learn Apptivity Case. Fisher Price very generously sent us one for Thurston to use. The steering-wheel shaped toy acts as a protective house for the iPod Touch or iPhone so that babies and toddlers can play with it safely. One of the main attractions is that it protects the iPod/phone from dribble, as I lost my iPod Nano to Thurston’s dribble. It also means that the child cannot press the home button which is reassuring if you are not supervising them the whole time, as thurston has been known to ring or even text people when I’m busy, and I don’t really want him ringing 999!! I’m not sure if it is designed to, but it definitely does protect the iPod/phone from knocks and scrapes and also prevents it getting covered in Marmite and ketchup!

Everyone with a toddler, and particularly an Autistic toddler knows how valuable an iPod/phone can be to keep kids entertained and calm. It’s particularly useful when you spend a lot of time waiting around at hospitals and clinics for appointments. They are such expensive gadgets but so so useful, so it is definitely worth investing in an Apptivity Case from Fisher Price to help it last a little longer.
